the timeline
Summer 2019 — We first moved to Orlando so Trevor could participate in a Disney internship. God led us to an amazing church, opened our eyes to the brokenness in this city, and developed within our hearts a deep care for this community. But then, the world stopped …
Spring/Summer 2020 — With the pandemic on the scene and our first child on the way, and therefore in search of a more stable financial situation, we accepted an out-of-state job opportunity.
Spring 2021 — God convicted us that He had placed us in Orlando on purpose. We believed He was leading us to move back.
Summer 2021 — We made the move, rekindled our involvement at our church, and prayed for clarity regarding the plans God had for us here.
Early 2022 — God answered our prayers with a compelling invitation to formally launch our own ministry. The focus: reaching the vulnerable through Biblical principles of hospitality.
2022 into 2023 — God blessed us with so many amazing connections to help us start serving the vulnerable in our midst, and we learned … a lot.
Spring 2023 — In order to increase our effectiveness, we narrowed our ministry focus to young adults and we more clearly emphasized the evangelism and discipleship components of our efforts.
Fall 2023 — We revised our mission statement to better reflect the specific scope of our organization’s purpose.
We are vessels for God’s redeeming work in the lives of vulnerable young adults in the Orlando area.
FAQs
What do you mean by “vulnerable”?
We define vulnerable as those who are in need of special care or support because of challenging circumstances such as: migration, social isolation, mental health issues, feelings of being overworked and underpaid, and more.
We definitely don’t want people to see us as rescuers - we want them to see Jesus as the only savior. Saying someone is vulnerable is not to say they are inferior. Rather, we recognize every human being as bearing the image of God and always seek to learn from those we serve. We aren’t just serving them and teaching them; we welcome their gifts and perspectives. We get to learn more about what it means to be human from them.
What we do mean is that they are in a situation of great need -- be it spiritual or physical. Our hope is to see them go from vulnerable to flourishing because of the Holy Spirit’s redeeming work in their life.
What do you mean by “justice”?
The foundation of this concept is our belief that God is just. Therefore, He alone has the authority to define what is truly justice - or said differently, we should only apply the term “injustice” to issues in our world in light of a Biblical worldview.
That said, God’s word is very clear: we are to act justly and care for the vulnerable. When we see injustice in the world, it is God’s will that the Church would engage in order to bring light and freedom to bear. As an example, we are acting justly as we connect lonely, isolated individuals with authentic community.
Why Central Florida?
The simple answer is: we’re called.
But, here are some stats that showcase why this area has such a great need for missionaries:
GROWING POST-CHRISTIAN ENVIRONMENT
2 out of every 5 Central Florida residents are de-churched (formerly churched) - this is 30% more than the national average
THE NATIONS ARE HERE (think unreached people groups!)
1 out of every 5 were born outside the U.S. - this is 57% more than the national average
Over 12,000 college students from over 60 countries move to Orlando every year for Walt Disney World internships
What is your experience in ministry?
Some roles we’ve held are:
Mission Trip Group Leader
Church Director of Communications
Nonprofit Executive Director
Supervisor of Youth Camp Volunteer Staff
Community Group Leader (for adults)
Youth Camp Speaker (teaching the Gospel)
Bible Study Leader (for adults)
Small Group Leader (for students)
What is your experience cross-culturally?
Our family has visited over 30 countries and we speak both English and Spanish in our home. We have also lived with people from other countries.
What makes you different from other ministries?
Our focus as an organization is relational ministry (specifically hospitality). We know many organizations that focus on educational equipping, which is great, but we push beyond that level of ministry and dig into the mess of relationships with broken people. Again, we exist to minister to the hearts of vulnerable people (see Genesis 16, Genesis 21, and Luke 8). We are not saying we’re the only relational ministry, but how highly we value that component is what makes us unique.
